Spondylosis

Spondylosis is a form of spinal degeneration that arises from biochemical changes within the body’s tissues. A certain degree of spinal degeneration is normal with age, however serious spondylosis may require surgical attention.

The vertebrae of the spinal column are stacked upon one another with cushioning tissue in between them. When the cushioning tissue breaks down or the vertebrae become weakened (e.g., osteoporosis), the spine may develop spondylosis. Symptoms of spondylosis include neck and back pain, weakness and stiffness, loss of sensation in the extremities, problems maintaining balance, and, in severe cases, bowel/bladder trouble. Spondylosis can be caused by an accident, repetitive, stresses, or the precise cause may never be found. Although it is not preventable, symptoms of spondylosis can be successfully managed.
